Human Trial Facility

Lund University has a long tradition of research that promotes healthy eating habits. At the Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition there exists extensive knowledge on how to design, execute and report clinical trials on food. The aim of our research is to promote development of innovative food and diets with preventive effects, with emphasis on cardiometabolic diseases, cognitive function decline, neurodegenerative diseases, and promotion of intestinal health.

Work at the department has facilitated development of several novel food items and nutritional concepts that have helped address societal challenges like obesity, the metabolic syndrome and other diet-related chronic diseases. The research at the department has contributed to a greater understanding of how the right food and diet can support a healthy lifestyle.

The activities at the human trial facilities for food studies are performed in well-adapted facilities, including rooms for meal studies, and cognition tests, laboratories for blood sampling and analysis, kitchens for development of test products and preparation of test meals. Capacity is available for the possibility of handling several parallel interventions. The work is conducted, in collaboration with both industrial partners and other academic organizations and is supported by an infrastructure investment from Faculty of Engineering at Lund University.

Development of novel methods/tools for testing and documentation of innovative food concepts is an important part of our activities at Human Trial Facilities. We believe that this has made us well equipped to address challenges in the emerging research field of "Precision Nutrition" and we are looking forward to new collaborations within this area.
